How this 'grid doctor' maintains the health of Singapore's electricity network so everything stays on

RELIABILITY

Eric Lee + SP Group — Before adopting new technologies, Eric Lee (front) and his colleagues previously used portable diagnostics tools to detect anomalies in the electrical equipment in substations.

SP’s technical officer Eric Lee shares how he and his team from Asset Sensing & Analytics have advanced from manual inspections to digital diagnostics. Previously, Eric trekked through substations, inspecting panels one by one and recording data by hand – a time-consuming and physically demanding process.

Committed to upskilling and leveraging technology, Eric and his team now uses smart sensors remotely to detect anomalies in real time, enabling faster and more accurate fault detection. The shift has saved over 1,000 man-hours annually and allowed Eric to focus on higher-level tasks like localising defects and interpreting data trends.
