Through its joint venture SSES, SP Group will operate and maintain the integrated energy system at Western China’s largest high-speed rail hub
Chongqing and Singapore, 4 August 2025 – SP Group has been appointed as the integrated energy system operator for the newly opened Chongqing East Railway Station, the largest high-speed rail hub in Western China. Awarded through Sino-Singapore Energy Services (SSES), SP Group’s joint venture with Chongqing Gas Group, the project marks the first time a major high-speed railway hub in the country has appointed a professional third-party energy services provider to manage its energy systems.
This achievement reflects the increasing demand in China for specialised, energy-efficient solutions in large-scale infrastructure projects. SSES was engaged from the early planning and construction stages to provide technical design expertise and financial feasibility studies for the integrated system.
The integrated energy system spans 360,000 square metres and features a trigeneration setup — combining natural gas-powered electricity generation with high-efficiency chillers to provide cooling, heating and electricity. With a capacity of nearly 14,000 refrigeration tonnes (RT), the system is expected to reduce energy consumption by 15 per cent and cut carbon emissions by approximately 9,400 tonnes per year, compared to conventional systems.
Located at the heart of Chongqing’s expanding transport network, Chongqing East Railway Station is a key national gateway that combines high-speed rail, metro lines, long-distance coach services, and city buses into one seamless hub. Designed to serve millions of passengers annually, it is a cornerstone of China’s “multi-modal” transportation strategy and places exceptionally high demands on energy reliability, efficiency, and sustainability.
Michael Zhong, Managing Director, China, SP Group, said, “This is a breakthrough for SP Group and our joint venture SSES. With our expertise and track record in delivering sustainable energy solutions, we are entrusted to meet the energy usage demands of China’s most complex transport hubs. In managing the full lifecycle of this critical energy system, we are setting a new benchmark for low-carbon, high-performance operations in China’s key infrastructure.”
A spokesperson for Chongqing Railway Investment Group, the project owner, said, “Chongqing East Railway Station requires the highest standards in energy resilience, performance and sustainability. By appointing SSES, we are moving away from the traditional ‘self-build and operate’ approach and embracing a specialised service model that improves energy performance, reduces emissions, lowers maintenance costs and supports our vision for a green and smart transport hub.”
SP’s key integrated energy management projects in China include iconic developments such as Raffles City Chongqing, the Guangzhou Knowledge Tower, and major projects in Chengdu, including the International Urban Design Centre, the International Sports Park City, and Shudu Center. Through our suite of sustainable energy solutions, SP is enabling cities, districts and buildings to optimise energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
As part of SSES, SP operates low-carbon energy systems across key public institutions in Chongqing, including the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, the Women and Children’s Hospital of Yongchuan, and the Danzishi CBD Headquarters Economic Zone.
