The Energy Market Authority (EMA) and Singapore Power (SP) jointly announced the launch of a Request for Proposal (RFP) to implement a utility-scale Energy Storage System (ESS) Test-bed.
1. Findings from this initiative will help us better understand and facilitate the deployment of ESS in Singapore. Energy storage has the potential to allow us to better manage electricity demand. It will also facilitate greater deployment of solar, thereby reducing our carbon footprint and contributing to energy independence.
2. This ESS Test-bed is projected to be 6MW in size, which can power 500 four-room HDB flats for a day. The Test-bed will evaluate the performance of large-scale ESS for different grid applications. Different technologies such as Li-ion, flywheels, and redox flow batteries could be deployed at three substation locations in Singapore.
3. This Test-bed is unique as proposals will have to take into account operating conditions under our hot and humid climate, which impact ESS performance. Space constraints and safety concerns will also have to be factored in given our highly built-up and urbanised environment.
4. The RFP is available at https://www.ema.gov.sg/Energy_Storage_Programme.aspx and interested parties are invited to submit proposals by 12pm on 3 August 2016.
