By employing robotics and digitalisation, SP Group is transforming the maintenance of our underground electricity network, making routine inspections safer, smarter and more efficient.
As part of SP’s tunnel maintenance team, Technical Officer Deric Tang and his colleague would walk up to 6km to look for anomalies in the tunnel. However, such laborious and physically demanding work is set to become a thing of the past, thanks to a robotic dog called SPock that Deric has been helping to train. Armed with video and thermal cameras, the robotic dog can navigate tunnels on its own, flagging defects and logging reports of its findings in real time.
Besides improving our emergency preparedness, the SPock project has also enabled the team to acquire technological skills and sharpen SP’s competitive edge.
