Solar Car After Setback, Supported By Singapore 29 September 2015 News release For immediate release SINGAPORE POLYTECHNIC STUDENTS REBUILD SOLAR CAR AFTER SETBACK, SUPPORTED BY SINGAPORE POWER Singapore, 29 September 2015 – Just three weeks from departure for a prestigious international race, Singapore Polytechnic students’ chances of competing were crushed when their self-built solar car, SunSPEC4 was destroyed. Undaunted, the Singapore Polytechnic team rose to the challenge to rebuild the car, with strong support from sponsor Singapore Power. The team of 52 students and lecturers worked nights and weekends to rebuild a new vehicle in four weeks, compared to eight months for the original car. With additional funding and logistical support from Singapore Power, the team acquired and assembled parts under a highly-compressed schedule. Airfreight saved two weeks, compared to marine freight. Singapore Power alumni – all alumni of Singapore Polytechnic – also provided additional support. The polytechnic’s team is the only Singapore contender in what is considered the toughest solar car race in the world. The team will travel 3,000km from Darwin to Adelaide in six days, using only solar energy. Singapore Power is the sponsor of this initiative, through a five-year $1 million-partnership. The wide-ranging agreement will enable the Singapore Polytechnic team to compete at the biennial World Solar Challenge in 2015, 2017 and 2019. Mr Steven Chew, Team Manager and Senior Lecturer at the polytechnic’s School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, said, “The students had worked so hard to create the solar car. Just when we were ready to unveil it and pit it against the world’s best at the World Solar Challenge, the setback took everything away. We were devastated to see 20 months of hard work totally destroyed in front of us. But we received strong encouragement from our Board and management, and the students responded by committing to rebuild the car to stay in the Challenge. This became possible when Singapore Power stepped up their sponsorship, including airfreighting the car, which shaved two weeks from the schedule.” Mr Lee Kok Kin, Singapore Power’s Head of Group Risk Management and alumni of the polytechnic, said “Singapore Power stepped up our support so that the entire production can be expedited, especially with supply of materials. We also helped to secure space for road testing. My colleagues and I, all alumni, joined the team to help where we are needed. We want to see our juniors bounce back from this setback, and are committed to supporting them with funding, time and all resources necessary.” 1 Singapore Power Group CEO Mr Wong Kim Yin said, “It is important that we support the students to help them overcome the setback. Against all odds, they have committed themselves to stay in the World Solar Challenge. We must nurture this resilient, “never-saydie” spirit in our younger generation. Singapore can be proud of our SunSPEC team as they hold our flag high in Australia!” Besides being Singapore’s sole entry, SunSPEC4 is the only team from a polytechnic, competing alongside leading global universities such as Stanford University, Cambridge University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The team is in the advanced Cruiser Class category of the competition which encourages the cars to be designed for practicality and acceptance in today’s market segment. Participants in the Cruiser Class race some 3,000km across the breadth of Australia from Darwin to Adelaide, without a single drop of fuel and with only one mid-point charging station. Vehicles operate on actual roads, at road speeds. Singapore Polytechnic is participating in the World Solar Challenge for the third time, with SunSPEC4 as its first entrant in the Cruiser Class. About the partnership between Singapore Power and Singapore Polytechnic Singapore Power and Singapore Polytechnic announced a SGD $1 million, five-year partnership which will see the two organisations collaborate to participate at the next three editions of the World Solar Challenge in 2015, 2017 and 2019. As part of the partnership, Singapore Power will contribute building materials, subject-matter expertise, logistics and public education. Singapore Power’s key objectives for this partnership are: To nurture and develop the next generation of engineers and talents Sustainability – To develop energy efficiency initiatives in caring for the environment Innovation – To promote renewables and innovation in technology developments, such as Solar Powered devices Project Overview 3 About the Team Size Background 43 students, nine lecturers and three Singapore Power engineers Multi-disciplinary team representing expertise from the schools of Electrical & Electronic Engineering; Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering; and Digital Media & Infocomm Technology The team designed and built the original SunSpec4 over a 20-month period – from December 2013. Following a fire on 25 August 2015, the team subsequently rebuilt a new SunSPEC4 from scratch in just four weeks. Singapore Power stepped up its sponsorship to help the team stay in the race. The new SunSPEC4 was also rebuilt with the additional safety measures: Reinforcements to strengthen solar car body Solar panels able to follow body contour for improved aerodynamics Improved battery system with compartmentalisation and usage of flame retardant materials Enhanced battery management system with external fuse protection for battery system Improved ventilation for driver and passenger Detailed handling checklists and procedures, covering e.g. mechanical, battery, and motor subsystems About SunSPEC4 SunSPEC4 is Singapore Polytechnic’s fourth solar car, and its first two-seater model. Designed and built completely in-house, SunSPEC4 resembles a futuristic saloon car – albeit one powered solely by solar cells. In contrast to the polytechnic’s previous solar models, SunSPEC4 is designed to perform similarly to a standard commercial car in terms of speed, seating capacity, and range. Incorporating leading-edge technology throughout its engineering, many of the car’s features outperform commercial variants. For example, SunSPEC4 weights a mere 220kg – a fifth of an average 1.6 litre car, and uses thinner solar panels which are approximately 10 per cent more efficient than typical commercial versions. SunSPEC4’s drag coefficient of 0.13 is more than 50 per cent more efficient than an average passenger car. The car is Singapore Polytechnic’s most technologically advanced and highest performing model to date. 4 SunSPEC4 will be Singapore’s sole representative at the World Solar Challenge; and the only team from a polytechnic, competing alongside leading global universities such as Stanford University, Cambridge University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. For the first time in Singapore Polytechnic’s participation at the World Solar Challenge, the team will be competing in the more advanced Cruiser Class. In this category, teams are encouraged to design their cars based on innovation, energy consumption, as well as practicality and acceptance from endusers. For this reason, Temasek Cares wants to help build the resilience of our community, through its „Stay Prepared‟ initiative. “Temasek Cares is very pleased to partner Singapore Power and Singapore Post for this initiative to provide „Stay Prepared‟ Starter Kits to every household in Singapore. The Starter Kit includes three N95 masks so that each household can have an initial stock in case of a flu pandemic or severe haze from the forest fires in the region. We hope the Starter Kits will prompt individuals and families to develop their own emergency plans. The Starter Kit with the emergency contact numbers and the N95 masks can be useful additions to their family or personal emergency grab bags.” Mr Magnus added, “The Starter Kits programme is a significant step to fulfill Temasek Cares‟ vision of a resilient Singapore community – one that is ready for the unexpected, responds effectively to crises and recovers quickly from adversity. We will continue to come alongside people and partners in Singapore to create greater awareness of additional ways to be prepared. We believe such community initiatives are a useful way to complement national and individual efforts to keep Singapore safe.” Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Marican, Chairman of Singapore Power, said, “At Singapore Power, it is mission critical to respond to emergencies swiftly, safely and effectively. This readiness enables us to power every household and business in Singapore with world-class reliability, round the clock. We would like to encourage emergency preparedness among the community, so that it becomes second nature to everyone.” Tan Sri Hassan added, “We have mobilised our meter readers and technicians to distribute the „Stay Prepared‟ Starter Kits. We are running a call centre to address public queries on this effort. In addition, our staff volunteers will be distributing 17,000 starter kits to more than 140 charity homes for the elderly, disabled and other residential facilities . We would like to touch all facets of society in this outreach.” Mr Lim Ho Kee, Chairman of Singapore Post said: “We are happy to be part of this nationwide community effort to help Singapore households stay prepared. Over the next few days, some 1,200 postmen and postwomen will distribute the „Stay Prepared‟ Starter Kits to every HDB and high-rise household. As a responsible and trusted national postal service provider, SingPost remains committed to deploy our last mile delivery capability and resources to help with such meaningful initiatives.” Singapore Power has set up a hotline where members of the public can get information about the delivery of the „Stay Prepared‟ Starter Kits. The delivery hotline (Tel: 1800-738-2000) will be in operation from Monday 5 May 2014, to Saturday 24 May 2014, from 8.00 am to 8.00pm daily. 29 September 2015 News release For immediate release SINGAPORE POLYTECHNIC STUDENTS REBUILD SOLAR CAR AFTER SETBACK, SUPPORTED BY SINGAPORE POWER Singapore, 29 September 2015 – Just three weeks from departure for a prestigious international race, Singapore Polytechnic students’ chances of competing were crushed when their self-built solar car, SunSPEC4 was destroyed. [20190109] Media Release - SP Group offers EV full charging in 30 minuteshttps://www.spgroup.com.sg/dam/spgroup/wcm/connect/spgrp/ba2bf3c4-81a4-446a-b5d2-c28c3e2f6b2a/%5B20190109%5D+Media+Release+-+SP+Group+offers+EV+full+charging+in+30+minutes.pdf?MOD=AJPERES
News Release SP Group offers EV full charging in 30 minutes Singapore, 9 January 2019 – Electric vehicle (EV) users can now fully charge their vehicles in 30 minutes at SP Group’s (SP) island-wide charging network, with the largest number of fast direct current (DC) chargers. SP is building Singapore’s largest public EV charging network with 1,000 points, including 250 DC charging points, by 2020. SP’s first wave of 38 charging points are located at commercial buildings, industrial sites and educational institutions. (See Annex for the list of charging locations) The locations are close to amenities such as food centres, offering drivers greater convenience while waiting for their vehicles to be charged. There are 19 high-powered 50kW direct current (DC) charging points and the other 19 are 43kW alternating current (AC) charging points. These are among the fastest EV charging points in Singapore. The 50kW DC chargers can fully charge a car in 30 minutes. Over the next few years, SP will introduce more high-powered DC charging points of up to 350kW. Other than SP’s, there are six other DC chargers in Singapore. SP’s new additions will be a game-changer in improving the charging turnaround time for EV drivers in Singapore. EV drivers can also enjoy at least 50 per cent cost savings compared to typical Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles for every kilometre travelled. The cost of using SP charging points will be regularly adjusted, mainly influenced by the prevailing electricity costs in Singapore. “Our nation-wide public charging network offers EV drivers fast charging, with greater convenience and a seamless experience through our digital solution, at cost-competitive rates. This will encourage wider adoption of green mobility in Singapore, and enable drivers to save cost,” said Mr Wong Kim Yin, Group Chief Executive Officer of SP Group. EV drivers can use SP Group’s charging service through the SP Utilities mobile application where they can search for the nearest available charging points, receive updates on their charging sessions and make payment. This first wave of locations includes Singapore Polytechnic. The SP charging points there will also serve as an education and research platform, as part of Singapore Polytechnic’s engineering curriculum to train students and adult learners. Thought this collaboration, SP Group and Singapore Polytechnic aim to develop new skills related to EVs and related charging technologies for Singapore. SP Group is also showcasing its charging points at the Singapore Motorshow 2019 at Suntec City from 10 to 13 January 2019. They will be located at the BMW and Hyundai booths. At the Singapore-Guangdong Collaboration Council (SGCC) on Monday (Aug 31), both sides pledged to work together to s trengthen economic relations. Singapore firms and their partners signed 15 agreements at the annual meeting, which was conducted by video conference this year. Co-chaired by Singapore Transport Minister Ong Ye Kung and Guangdong Governor Ma Xingrui, it was the first provincial business council meeting between Singapore an be convened amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Mr Ong told the meeting there was scope for Singapore and Guangdong to work together in green finance, fintech, disaster risk insurance and Reits (real estate investment structuring. Besides financial services, he also called for more talent exchanges between Singapore and Guangdong. Mr Ong, who was previously education minister , signed an agreement with China last year on the Youth Interns Exchange Scheme, which allows up to 500 Singaporean f students and recent graduates from universities and polytechnics each year to secure visas for internships with China-based companies. The agreement allowed for a reciprocal arrangement for Chinese students in Singapore. "We had hoped to see the first batch of internship exchanges earlier this year, but Covid-19 made this challenging. Nonetheless, with our Singapore-China fast lane in place to facilitate internship exchanges for students very soon, especially with Guangdong, once the implementation agreement on (the scheme) is signed," said Mr Ong. Singapore is the fi in South-east Asia with such an arrangement with China. On the sidelines of the meeting, Mr Ong told reporters that the quota of seats on flights under the fast lane arrangement - including 500 seats across two flights per week b Singapore and Guangdong's capital Guangzhou - was "very underused". "These are things that we will work on and officials will discuss in the coming months, and we hope we will have good progress," he said. Besides these areas, Mr Ong noted that two bilateral projects - the China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City and the Singapore-China (Shenzhen) Smart City Initiative made steady progress in the past year. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City, and Singapore aims to partner the city in its long-term development in areas su solutions and biomedicine. For example, local medical technology start-up Star3D Material Development Company signed a memorandum of understanding with the Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Kn City Investment and Development Co to further develop and commercialise the use of dental 3D technology in China. The firm, which isbased in Singapore and has a factory in Shanghai, aims to set up a joint laboratory and research platform, and introduce projects in the digital dental field general manager Chen Baiqun. The Singapore-China (Shenzhen) Smart City Initiative focuses on three key areas - digital connectivity, innovation and entrepreneurship and tech talent exchange and dev and promotes greater ease of access to market opportunities in the Greater Bay Area and South-east Asia. Guangdong, China's most prosperous province, lies at the heart of the Greater Bay Area - a mega economic zone that includes nine cities in the province, Hong Kong and M In 2019, bilateral trade between Singapore and Guangdong grew 1.9 per cent year-on-year to reach US$19 billion (S$25.8 billion). In the first half of 2020, bilateral trade rea US$8.06 billion. There were more than 3,100 Singapore projects in the province as of December last year, with cumulative investments of US$13.1 billion. Beyond the key cities of Guangzhou and Shenzhen, Singapore businesses have also ventured to new Greater Bay Area cities such as Huizhou, tapping on opportunities in smart city solutions and financial services. The businesses include Keppel Data Centres, which is collaborating with China's Country Garden Holdings and Shenzhen Huateng Intelligent Technology to develop the data centre project in Huizhou's Tonghu Smart City. It is Keppel's first greenfield data centre development in China, said a Keppel Data Centres spokesman. National power grid operator SP Group has also entered into a joint venture agreement with the Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City Investment and Developmen establish a company focused on district cooling, heating and integrated energy projects in Guangzhou. The project is SP Group's first foray into southern China. Mr Stanley Huang, group chief executive officer of SP Group, said: "Together, we aim to enable customers in China to enjoy a sustainable, low-carbon future."
